I've always wondered about that.
Do you miss being in class with pals?
Do you think you learned more or less stuff than schoolschooled kids?
Why did your parents chose homeschooling before schoolschooling?
How's your schedule like? You have recess or something?
Do you get good grades? If there's any sort of certificate in the US that acknowledges that you have those studies, how do you get it? I assume your parents can't just give it to you.

(there's barely homeschooling in Spain and the few kids who are homeschooled here are usually behind the regularly schooled kids i.e. it's not a big success in here that's why I wonder)

I've always heard that homeschooled kids in the US test much better than schoolschooled kids but then again that's not suprising because our public school system is a fucking joke. Most people I know who homeschool their kids do so because they don't want their child growin up in the Orwellian liberal indoctrination centers that are public schools, but can't afford to pay twice to send their kid to private school.

No I don't think so.
I just don't know how homeschooling works, other than your FILTROWNED/daddy long legs/legal tutors/people paid by any of the former teaching you stuff. So you don't get evaluated in any way?
What would happen if you wanted to go to an actual school, or high school?
Can you be homehighschooled? If so, same stuff for accessing college.

I actually was homeschooled K-12.

Do you miss being in class with pals? We had homeschool "group lessons" that kind of took on a makeshift school setting. Those happened for a month or two every year, and there were just a bunch of "fun" classes that parents would volunteer to teach in a class setting. The purpose was to give the kids socialization. There were also homeschool sports.

All of these things were pretty pathetic and all the kids were pretty weird so I mostly got involved with other public schooled kids who I hung out with semi-frequently. Other than those things, I never really knew what it was like to be in class with pals until college.

Long story short: idk

Do you think you learned more or less stuff than schoolschooled kids? It depends on how you look at it. I taught myself a lot in my free time, and that's where I learned most things. I had a lot more free time than public schooled kids, though. I taught myself filmmaking and music and I read a lot.

Why did your parents chose homeschooling before schoolschooling? Probably religious reasons. I was never entirely clear on that one.

How's your schedule like? You have recess or something? In the same boat as ocomobro, my parents were never really the schedule type. We more had chore schedules than anything.

Do you get good grades? If there's any sort of certificate in the US that acknowledges that you have those studies, how do you get it? I assume your parents can't just give it to you. Your parents are free to grade you however they like, but in the state of NY you're required to take a test once a year to make sure you're up to speed. As far as diplomas, there are different methods you can take.
I took the GED/SAT method, which winds up being as valid as anything else.

I noticed that the "miss" thing was kind of lost in translation. With miss I'm not implying you guys were homeschooled before, I meant if you would sometimes have preferred regular schooling.

I used to wish it all the time, but now that it's all over I realize it probably wouldn't have made a huge difference.

Well, since this thread actually turned serious, I guess I'll post my experience too. I was homeschooled from 2nd grade until 8th grade (ie I went to two years of school, then was homeschooled, then went to a public high school), so I have experience with both systems.

Do you miss being in class with pals?
There are homeschool groups around where people teach their kids together, and near me there are lots of places that offer random classes for kids, and a lot of homeschoolers were in there, so homeschooling isn't always at "home." For us it was a mix of both.
It wasn't so bad as a little kid, but around middle school years it kind of sucked. I did have friends, but I usually saw them only once or twice a week instead of every day.
I definitely liked seeing my friends every day when I was in high school and college, but I didn't really like taking classes with other people too much. I guess I'd still just rather learn on my own for most things.
There are definitely some socialization things you miss out on, though I'd argue not all of them are necessarily bad. Of course it depends on how much the kids actually get to see other people...I've known other homeschoolers who have been really sheltered and you can tell.
(Fun fact though, first time I drank, smoked or got high was when I was hanging out with some friends who was also homeschooled, so it definitely doesn't completely protect kids from "bad influences" as much as some parents might like!)

Do you think you learned more or less stuff than schoolschooled kids?
More, but a lot of it was just me being given time to learn stuff I wanted to know on my own, like rice said.

Why did your parents chose homeschooling before schoolschooling? I'm not entirely sure but I think it had partially to do with the fact that our school system wouldn't let me skip ahead, even though I was ahead of most of my classmates, and my parents worried I wasn't really going to be taught at as high a level as I should. I don't mean that to sound braggy or anything, but I was basically a child genius. Not like it matters because I'm pretty dumb now Classy.

How's your schedule like? You have recess or something?
I think it was more structured when I was younger, but once I got to be old enough to do stuff on my own it was pretty much "here's what you have to do this week, do it whenever you wish" which I think was actually pretty good because it taught me about how to manage my time instead of just being told "here's what you need to do when."

Do you get good grades? If there's any sort of certificate in the US that acknowledges that you have those studies, how do you get it? I assume your parents can't just give it to you.
It's probably state-based. I remember taking standardised tests quite a few times, I'm guessing that was some kind of way for the state to make sure I was on track.
There are homeschooling lesson plans people sell and parents can also buy textbooks and teachers' textbooks with tests in them, though those kind of grades probably wouldn't be accepted by the schools--I think I had to take some tests when I went back to school to see what kind of classes I should be in.

Totally willing to answer more questions, if you have them. There are plenty of pros and cons either way.

I'm watching Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd on TV and for some reason they just mentioned they were both homeschooled.
