You can own a gun at 18 in the US (for shotguns and rifles, it's 21 for a handgun).
And unfortunately there's no such thing as "too young to be a Republican." Dissapointed

First of all, I'm not a republican. Second, why shouldn't 18 year olds be allowed to own firearms? "Those who sacrafice liberty for security deserve neither and shall lose both." I own 6 guns, carry one nearly everywhere I go, and have never shot at anyone and probably never will. It's not like just because we have guns it's the wild fucking west. 99.99% of gun owners are normal sane individuals who will never use lethal force to harm anyone. Besides its not like gun control prevents or even reduces violent crime (gunfacts.info). Only idiots fear being shot, your chances of dying from a car accident, heart attack, stroke, etc... Are exponentially higher. I'll never understand you people who so willingly surrender your liberty to he laws of government based on the indisputably false notion that the government will protect you or keep you safe.

I love how some americans seem to think that owning a firearm is the essence of being free. It's not like everyone else are slaves of the government because we don't carry a lethal weapon at all times lol.

And this doesn't make sense.

Just because north koreans are told where to live, what they can eat and how much doesn't mean they aren't free. They still get to chose their professions and what they do for fun. It's not like theyre slaves to the government just because they can't make choices about how, when, where, what and with whom to do certain things.

Implying North Korea is comparable to "every other country that isn't USA"
Implying that, absolutely, owning a firearm is a necessary, and one of the most important conditions to be qualified as free.
Implying that freedom and guns have to do with eachother what the fuck am I reading.

Freedom is about personal choices and personal responsibility. I am personally responsible for defending myself and I chose to defend myself with a gun.

Also implying I said or implied either of these things. You guys are pissing me off with this putting words in my mouth shit. I'm talking about not letting someone else tell you what you can and can't do/have. If you can't connect that concept to the concept of liberty, you're fucking retarded.

Sure, why the fuck not. We already have laws on the books preventing psychopaths, gang members, people with histories of violence from getting weapons, so if grandpa olderly wants to start a tank collection, I say let him.

Can you "bear" a grenade?

Bah whatever, my point is that just because most governments don't let you do something that is a potential harm no matter how you see it or how many people die from heart attacks compared to deaths by guns (also, people still die from heart attacks with or without guns. But they need guns to get shot), it doesn't mean that there's a "lack of freedom".

There's a lack of freedom with things like trying to scan the eyes of Occupy to register them like if they were criminals
Or get the feds to raid their houses even if they can because of your lovely Patriot Act (so much fucking freedom, that one) which allows to raid anyone's house claiming that he's a terrorist.

The second amendment was designed to kick out the English crown. So I say, if you're so proud of it, use it to make your unfree country free.

Before you say anything. No, my country isn't more free than yours either.

I just wish there were mandatory education about guns, and maybe, some sort of license restriction and qualification to use/carry them. Gun advocates would obviously argue against this, and in fact actively push for less and less restriction.

Take for example my home state of Arizona. Passed a law 2 years ago that you can carry a concealed weapon, without permit, anywhere that you could carry openly, while lowering significantly the requirements to obtain the conceal-carry permit for carry in the places that the permit is still required (restaurants, bars). This had the effect of lowered enrollment in formally required training courses at one facility by close to 80%[1]. In effect, more people with guns we can't be aware of, and gun owners that very well may not have proper training or instruction on proper use or operation of a firearm.

I've never understood how carrying a gun is different than driving a car. Both are quite deadly, especially in the operation of someone not trained in their use. Why is it wholly acceptable and encouraged that we maintain the law that requires someone to be licensed and hold insurance for one, and it be an infringement of liberty to even suggest such methods for the other?

Edit: When I say mandatory I mean for the general population, not just for those seeking gun ownership or permit. I envision something like how sex-ed is now, where people can opt-out if they feel strongly enough, but would still result in a net gain of educated folks. The fact of the matter is that there is a lot of misinformation and scare tactics being employed by all sides of the argument (as with any), and something like that may help people make more informed decisions for themselves and for the policies they would like to see in place.

Yo for real though America is losing freedoms every day and guns have nothing to do with it. I'm totally for people being allowed to own guns but it's pretty much at the bottom of the list of "important civil liberties" in my mind.

First of all, owning a hand grenade is reasonable, carrying one around with you everywhere you go is not. Check out the late Charlton Heston's gun collection.

I am the most die hard civil liberties advocate you will ever find but I think its more than reasonable to expect people to go through a course on firearm safety before being allowed to own and carry weapons. I took several courses myself (1 ones mandatory, the others I took because they are fun) and I could not disagree more with my fellow NRA members when they say that this kind of training is unnecessary for firearm owners.

Also, I am well aware that there are much bigger fish to fry than firearm legislation in the United States. I could go on for days about the Patriot Act, NDAA, information restriction laws, etc... I echo Rickton's concern that firearms legislation in the US is at the back of the list, it just happened to be brought up.

One very important part of this discussion that hasn't been brought up though, is what are you going to do when the zombie apocalypse comes? I'm ready...
