Article is in Spanish, a quick summary:
El Prado (most important museum in Madrid) discovers a copy of 'La Gioconda'
It's a replica painted by one of his favorite disciples (probably Andrea Salai, who would later become a lover of the maestro) or Francesco Melzi.
And as you can see, the copy is way better than the original. The woman looks prettier, even. |

I didn't bother to translate the spanish story, but this makes it sound like the original used to look a whole lot more like the "copy", making the point of it being better even less objective. I assume the copy wasn't subjected to the trappings of time quite as much (less public viewing, less light exposure/flash photog) and has such better upheld it's detail and color vividity, giving us a glimpse as to what the Mona Lisa once was.
